Come Visit Traditional Korean Markets!

1913 Songjeong Station Market

  • A 100-year-old traditional market where old shops coexist with new boutiques run by youth
  • Founded in 1913, it is packed with relatively old shops such as hardware stores and fish shops and youth-owned shops including dessert cafés and house-made beer pubs. These old and new shops are in perfect harmony with each other, which makes this market look as if it were a filming location.

The origin of 1913 Songjeong Station Market can be traced back to the Songjeong Yeokjeon Maeil Market (literally meaning “the Daily Outdoor Market across from Songjeong Station”) founded 1913. To highlight 106 years of its history, the name of the market was changed to the current one. On the floor in every alley in this market, you can find an indicator showing the age of each building. What it suggests is the year of completion for the building in the direction of what it points at. While observing this, you will be able to imagine what this market with its long history was like in the past. Despite changes brought in the market, a total of 36 existing shops that are at least 100 years old have kept intact at least one of the following three items: signboard letters, shop structure, and store color. To preserve the original atmosphere and ambience of the market, any alternations to the existing market building was kept to a minimum while the signboards were newly designed reflecting on the memories of the vendors. This 106-year-old market was reborn not for the sake of change but for that of preservation and it is certainly one of the places you must visit during your stay in Gwangju.
